O fim do GeoCities

GeoCities finishes on October 26, says Yahoo!
SAO PAULO (SP) - Yahoo! Brazil shot an e-mail to users of hosting service Geocities. With a message: Oct. 26 is the end of the service. Since the decision is final, Yahoo! calls for the surfers who maintain websites and files stored in the service to download the data immediately. The application has an explanation. After the shovel of lime, all data will be automatically deleted from GeoCities servers. And they will not be recovered. In the e-mail, Yahoo! appreciates the loyalty of the Internet user who used the GeoCities in recent years. It also explains that the decision to end the site is because they decided to help "customers to explore and build online relationships in other ways." Not to leave the users completely alone, Yahoo! gives tips and links with instructions to save the active pages hosted in GeoCities. The GeoCities, launched in 1994, was one of the pioneers in offering tools for space and resources for building websites for free. In the mid-90s, the service was a great success on the web. Because of this, Yahoo!, when bought it in 1996, paid about US$ 3 billion.
The End of GeoCities
By Virginia Prescott
Back in 1995, well before the dot com bubble burst, the internet was an exciting and vast place, like the wild west. And for those looking to hang their shingle on the information superhighway, came an easy on-ramp called GeoCities. The site was precursor to online networks and blogging platforms.
Users could quickly create personal homepages or star wars fan sites, and update them regularly. Then, of course, came blogger and metafilter and myspace. A decade and a half later, GeoCities is a virtual ghost town and the butt of internet jokes. The site's owner, Yahoo, announced this spring that it plans to shutter GeoCities for good.
